Keeping up with changes in the publishing industry is like being in the Sahara in the middle of a windstorm. Just when I have the lay of the land figured out, the wind comes up and the sands shift again. Digitization is galloping forward; e-book readers like the Kindle and now the new I-Pad are gaining devotees. It’s not enough for authors to simply write books these days. We need to keep abreast of the changes in the industry too. With that in mind, I’m heading off in early March to a symposium put on by the Writers’ Union of Canada. The subject: Secure Footing in a Changing Literary Landscape. The place: Vancouver, my sort-of home town since I grew up there. I plan to learn lots, eat lots (I’m already planning the sushi stops), visit with writer friends, and, once the symposium is over, start researching a new book (which will involve more sushi and probably some good curry too). The CWILL sponsored kids’ book bash at the Fairfield Community Centre in late winter was a huge success. Thanks to everyone who turned out. Winners of tickets to see the Salmon Kings play included Noah Watts-Wooldridge, Marina Harpe, Cheryl Carter-Rolke and Malcolm Buchal.
Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish book club rights have been sold to Hannah’s Touch, my latest YA novel from Orca Book Publishers. I can’t wait to get my hands on the foreign editions!
I had a great time visiting the students at Reynolds Secondary School this fall. I’m now booking for spring. Contact me directly if you’d like me to come to your school. Please note: my Ontario visits are arranged through Authors. Booking Service. Find them at: www.authorsbooking.com
