I’ve been talking to students in schools and libraries for over 15 years. I can gear my talk to a specific book or I can broaden out. As an example, teachers sometimes ask me to focus on Lesia’s Dream and the issue of racism and Ukrainian immigration to Canada just prior to World War One. Or they want me to concentrate on my picture book, Mile High Apple Pie, and the struggles we face watching a beloved grandparent lose their memory. Most often, however, I am asked to be a generalist, which suits me just fine! Then, I talk about where my ideas come from, how I write that important first draft, and why revising is so important. For older audiences, I go into more detail about re-writing, submitting and the publishing process. In most cases, there’s lots of audience interaction with age-appropriate writing activities. I generally allow time for a short reading as well as a question and answer session. Presentations run 45 - 70 minutes, depending on the age of the students and classroom schedules.

On Research:

Whether they specialize in fiction or non-fiction, all authors research. Not only is research important, but it can also be fun. During this talk, I use my books to discuss how writers research. I talk about good research sources (some of them may surprise you!) and how to access them. Suitable for late intermediate and up.

The Audience

I’ve done many presentations for students from grades 1 through 10, and in various group sizes. Because I like to involve the students, I prefer to talk to no more than two classes at once, although I am flexible.

The best audiences are prepared. Students will get significantly more out of a presentation if they have read one of my novels or picture books ahead of time.

Room & Equipment

A classroom works well for small groups while a library or multi-purpose room works better for larger groups. I prefer not to do readings in the gym.

I’ll need a large table to display my material, a glass of water and a chair. A blackboard or flip chart is also helpful.

Afterwards

If time permits, I’m happy to stay to sign books or autographs. Please let me know in advance if you are interested in making books available for sale afterwards.
